Tapping into the next generation of food scientists

Food science student numbers are rising, but how can industry tap into this next generation of enthusiastic professionals? FoodNavigator-USA asked Matt Cael, 2011-2012 president-elect of the IFT Student Association.

Cael said that food manufacturers should nurture and take advantage of the creativity and enthusiasm that food science students can bring to the workplace by providing them with internships.

He also said that pursuing a course of study in food science can provide students with a combination of technical problem solving, the ability to have a positive effect on the world, and the opportunity to have fun - and in difficult economic times, food science provides relative job security.

Evan, I agree with Emily. Some of the best ways to find internships are to become involved in the different professional organizations. These organizations have excellent resources to connect individuals who are looking for jobs with potential employers. Also, in respect to Louisiana specifically, make sure that you get your name out to industry. There various companies in the area that are growing rapidly and need new talent.

Evan, have you checked out the ift.org career center? Also, you could talk with your professors to see if they know of any potential internships. Furthermore, I would suggest being flexible, if you can, and look for internships in other areas of the US. If you can attend the IFT Annual Meeting and Food Expo next summer, and will still need an internship, that is a great opportunity to attend the career fair and meet with companies.
