US-based company Meijer has acquired Bareman’s dairy and announced it will invest $8m (€6m) to expand the current plant.

They will assume control from 1 April but said it will be “several months” before milk is shipped to the company’s stores.

The Purple Cow Creamery will produce white and chocolate milk in gallon and half-gallon sizes for its stores across Michigan.

Co-chairman and CEO Hank Meijer said: “As Meijer continues to grow, it’s crucial we invest in the operations that will help us keep our promise of higher standards and lower prices to our customers. Expanding into dairy operations will do just that.”

Rick Keyes, executive vice president of supply chain and manufacturing said: “Producing our own Meijer brand milk allows us to continue to focus on keeping prices low for our customers, while also reducing the number of food miles for a very important product.”
