Innovative new packaging concepts were on display on the Sealed Air Cryovac stand at the AMI Expo in Dallas last week.

The packaging specialist was showcasing its new Quickrip range, a knifeless solution to open vac-packed meat products.

Shawn Harris, director of marketing for fresh red meat, said the product had originally been designed for the beef sector, but had proved so successful they were now rolling it out to pork products. The packaging is easily opened simply by tearing along a marked seal.

He said: “It’s a patented product which also plays a key food safety role. People would have previously used a box cutter to open the cardboard box, then the same knife to open the pack - so it’s had the plastic protecting it all through the supply chain, then everything that’s outside of the packaging is introduced by opening it with the knife. Millions are spent on food safety, just to be undone at the end of the line.”

He said the company was not charging any extra for the Quickrip and the packaging was perfectly suited to run on existing equipment.
