Newcastle disease strikes Nicaraguan chicken flock
An outbreak of Newcastle disease virus has been reported in a flock of chickens in Nicaragua.
According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the outbreak began in the Community Los Jirones. The outbreak was reported to the OIE six days after the owners of a 899 bird flock saw neurological disorders in the animals.
The birds were showing signs of incoordination, greenish diarrhoea and a lack of appetite, as well as nasal discharge, which was then followed by death.
"The owners decided to use antibiotics, but the signs of infection did not stop and mortality continued gradually up to 110 birds dead in 11 days," the OIE report said. "In the Community Palo Quemado, next to Los Jirones, the bird population was 881, of which 170 died showing the same symptoms described above."
