Many drugstore chains are significantly increasing their food and beverage offerings, but what products work best, and how can manufacturers cash in? 

In a video on the new Hartbeat Vista​ multimedia platform from Hartman Group, senior associate David Wright explores food opportunities in the drug store channel, shopper behavior and consumer perceptions of drug chains.

One issue drug chains face, says Wright, is that many consumers feel tied to a particular drug store by prescription drug plans, and do not feel that many chains offer a very exciting food shopping experience.

However, Walgreens is a "stand-out exception with its reinvention of the drug chain format in its offering of fresh and prepared food assortments and high quality private label products​", he says.

The chain - which is aiming to double private label sales over the next five to seven years (click here​), is also considering testing a gluten-free section in selected stores, according to Boulder Brands, which owns the Udis and Glutino gluten-free brands (click here)​.
