The term ‘probiotic’ may be banned in the European Union – along with its cousin ‘prebiotic’ – but sales remain steady, and the global picture is buoyant, says leading analyst, Euromonitor International.

“Roughly probiotic yoghurt accounts for 36% of the total yoghurt sales globally,” said global head of health and wellness research, Ewa Hudson at the recent FIE trade show in Frankfurt, Germany.

When food supplements are thrown into the equation the market sat at $30 billion (€22bn) worldwide in 2013, which would surge 51% to $45bn (€33.2bn) in 2018 (in real terms which factors in inflation), with emerging markets like China and Brazil leading the way, along with the US.

However things remain tough in the European Union since the 2012 claim ban, with, “a small decline” occurring.

Hudson will present a comprehensive global portrait of both pre- and probiotics at Probiota 2014 in Amsterdam on February 4-5.

Probiota 2014

Probiota 2014 will explore the prebiotic-probiotic scientific frontier, its evolution and commercial application in food, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics across the globe.

The 2-day, 2-stream event – formerly Probiotech and Microbiota - will be held in Amsterdam on February 4-5 this year. Will you be joining your peers there?
