Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice linked to illnesses in 3 US states

The symptoms appeared in children in three states shortly after eating the product and passed within 30 to 90 minutes, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice products sold in 5- and 25-pound bags were sold to food service companies that distribute to restaurants, schools and hospitals but they may be available on the Internet and at warehouse-type retailers, said the agency. Mars Foodservices is recalling all bags and all lot numbers of its Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice products produced in 2013. The firm said the illnesses may be related to high levels of niacin, or vitamin B3 in the rice. Thirty-four students and four teachers at three public schools in Katy, Texas were sickened earlier this month. Illinois Department of Public Health told CDC of 25 children with similar skin reactions following a school lunch that served an Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice product in December. North Dakota reported an incident in October were three children in a daycare and one college student experienced flushing reactions after consuming an Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice product. Uncle Ben’s Brand Ready to Heat, Boxed, Bag or Cup products sold at grocery stores and other retail outlets are not being recalled.
