Meat products recalled by Santa Maria Foods

According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the meat had been imported to the US for distribution throughout Arizona, California and Florida “without the benefit of a full USDA inspection”. The products were also exported to Australia, Tahiti, New Zealand, Fiji and Thailand. The FSIS has classified the recall as Class II, meaning the health risk is low. However it said without full inspection there was a remote possibility of adverse health consequences. Packages included in the recall bear the Canadian establishment number ‘340’ or ‘224’, said the FSIS, and mainly comprise salami products. The discovery was made when FSIS staff reviewed records and discovered the product was not presented by the independent third-party carrier for USDA inspection at the US/Canadian border. So far there have been no reports of any illness due to the consumption of these products.

Approximately 8,895lb of meat products are to be recalled by Canadian firm Santa Maria Foods Corporation, after it was found they had been imported without inspection.
