'90s redux: Surge soda returns
Twelve years after it was discontinued, the Coca-Cola Co. is reviving Surge soda after fans of the citrus-flavored soda launched a Facebook campaign to bring it back.
Surge will be exclusively sold on Amazon and made with the same formula used before, according to a statement from Coke. (As of publishing, Surge was already sold out.)
The drink launched in 1996 to compete with rising sales of Mountain Dew, but Coke dropped it in 2002 due to disappointing sales. Surge maintained enough of a cult following that in 2011 a group of dedicated fans set up a Facebook campaign called SURGE Movement to bring the brand back. The 143,000-strong group even paid for a billboard placed down the street from Coke’s headquarters in Atlanta last winter.
