Mexicans are being urged to avoid eating meat on Mondays in a new campaign by the Humane Society International.

A video promoting ‘Meatless Mondays’, voiced by Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, urges consumers to skip meat one day of the week. Similar campaigns in other countries have been backed by the likes of Paul McCartney.

Sabina Garcia, farm animal project and corporate outreach manager for HSI in Mexico, said: “We invite consumers in the country to join the movement and create a healthier and more humane planet. Other celebrities, including Paul McCartney, Enrique Bunbury and Bruno Bichir, support the Meatless Monday campaign, as do hundreds of schools, restaurants, governments and hospitals from around the globe. We look forward to working with institutions in Mexico to increase this movement.”

Derbez said: “It’s an honor to join Humane Society International’s Meatless Monday campaign in Mexico. We can all help animals, our health and the planet every time we sit down to eat by reducing our consumption of animal products. It’s really easy and you can always find delicious meat-free options in restaurants and supermarkets in Mexico. I invite consumers to also join this campaign, by sharing the video and signing the Meatless Monday pledge.”
