A subsidiary of Hormel Foods, the company behind canned meat Spam, plans to expand its manufacturing plant in Kansas, US, adding up to 380 jobs.

Dold Foods operates a meat processing plant in Wichita, Kansas, for Hormel Foods Corporation and plans to add more production lines at the premises to accommodate a nationwide increase in demand for bacon.

The factory will see a significant 156,000 square-foot expansion to create extra space for more machinery to be brought in that will eventually boost throughput of sliced bacon products. New production lines will require extra labour, with Dold Foods expected to hire around 380 additional workers, bringing its total workforce to over 600.

Early building work is expected to begin in the near future and the company said it hoped to be completed in the early months of 2019.

Investment will enhance workforce

We are thrilled to be able to grow our business here in Wichita and offer our community new job opportunities,” said Joe Peine, Dold Foods plant manager. “We have a dedicated team at Dold Foods and making this investment in our area will allow us to continue to add new team members.”

Local media report the company plans to invest $132m in the major expansion of the Dold Food plant and will be exempt from paying taxes for the next five years. Hormel Foods, however, did not disclose the sum of its investment and could not be reached for comment.

People in the Kansas area keen to apply for the new jobs at the Wichita plant will be able to do so from the spring 2018.
