Kyowa Hakko USA has announced self-affirmed GRAS status on its Setria ingredient, which is a branded form of glutathione.

Setria is a patented, tripeptide form of glutathione.  Glutathione, referred to as the body’s ‘master antioxidant,’ is found in virtually ever cell of the body and plays essential roles in protein synthesis, synthesis and repair of DNA, enzyme function, transport, and cell maturation. Setria has been on the market for a number of years for dietary supplement applications.

Optimal levels of glutathione have been associated with physical and mental health.  Kyowa Hakko USA, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Japanese company Kyowa Hakko Bio Co., Ltd., said that it has data that shows that supplementation with Setria can play a role in the elimination of toxins as well.

With GRAS affirmation, Setria®becomes a powerful ingredient for food and beverage manufacturers to add to their products as a way of supporting immune health, said Dr. Danielle Citrolo, PharmD, scientific and regulatory affairs manager for Kyowa Hakko USA. Attaining GRAS status opens the door for more people to make Setria the master antioxidant ingredient in their diet.

Setria will be marketed by Kyowa Hakko USA as a food ingredient in the United States for use at levels of 5 mg/serving to 400 mg/serving in foods and beverages, including: baked goods, cheeses, meal replacements, protein bars and ready to drink beverages.
