Argentina and Japan strengthen trade relations with bovine and ovine meat deal

The deal will include Patagonian bovine and ovine meat becoming available to purchase in Japan, while an agreement has also been made for Japanese meat to be approved for export to Argentina. Argentina’s minister for agriculture Luis Miguel Etchevehere and Japan’s minister for agriculture Ken Saito will reveal the trade deal at the Ministerial G-20 Meeting of Agriculture event on 28 July in Buenos Aires. Argentina has selected the theme ‘Building consensus for fair and sustainable development’ for the 2018 G20 Leaders’ Summit, and has identified three key issues for the agenda: the future of work, infrastructure for development and a sustainable food future. Argentina’s minister for agriculture Luis Miguel Etchevehere described the deal as an historic milestone for the country as they have never had access to the Japanese market before. “ This is an expression of the new stage of relations we are building ,” said Etchevehere. “ It is our desire to continue deepening the bonds of friendship and business between our two nations [Argentina and Japan] and take advantage of all the opportunities and the current international context offers us .” Etchevehere added that he believed that inaugurating a new stage in its relationship with Japan would produce a promising future for Argentina. In GlobalMeatNews’ State of the Industry report, Japan continued to be the world’s best customer for meat during 2017, buying a full US$1 billion more produce than its closest rival and neighbour, China.
