US processor Hormel Foods is to invest $150m in a project to expand its Burke Corporation facility in Nevada, Iowa.

The plant focuses on pizza toppings and fully cooked meat products for the foodservice and prepared food industries. The investment will nearly double the size of the facility from 225,000 sq ft of production, warehouses and offices to approximately 435,000 sq ft. It will also create 210 new jobs to add to the 350 employees currently on-site. It will begin recruiting additional team members as the expansion nears completion. Construction is due to begin in the next few months, pending local and state approval, with an expected completion date in early 2020.

Burke will continue to provide fully cooked meats to pizza operators, food manufacturers, and food distributors – along with category leading customization expertise, menu innovation and menu ideation during the expansion process.

"This expansion of our Burke facility is a significant and strategic investment, allowing us to continue to expand and accelerate growth in our foodservice portfolio," said Jim Snee, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer at Hormel Foods. "Burke has been a leader in the pizza topping industry, and this expansion will provide them with the additional capacity to meet the growing demand for its products."

"This investment is a testament to the Burke team and the pride every one of our team members puts into the creation of our customer's products," said Chad Randick, president of Burke Marketing Corporation. "The expansion will be a positive force for the Nevada community, bringing added jobs and boosting the local economy. We are proud to expand in Nevada and Story County where Burke has called home since 1974."
