JBS’ US-based business unit Tolleson has recalled almost 7m lbs of “raw non-intact beef products” from retailers and institutions following concerns of Salmonella Newport contamination.

The details were revealed from the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), who urged those who purchased the products to return to the place of purchase or throw them away.

Some of the US retail stores affected by the recall include Savemart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Harveys supermarket and Winn Dixie supermarket.

The products affected were packaged from various dates from 26 July – 7 September 2018.

FSIS was notified of the possible outbreak in September after 57 cases of salmonella illnesses were reported across 16 US states between 5 August and 6 September.

JBS Tollesen was identified as the main source of the outbreak after investigators checked receipts and shopper cards from eight of the 57 cases, allowing product traceability.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” said an FSIS spokesperson.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160°F.”

According to FSIS, symptoms of Salmonella Newport include abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts around four to seven days.

Other US-based meat businesses have had to recall ground beef in recent weeks, including Cargill, after concerns over E.coli contamination, resulting in the death of one person.
