Maple Leaf Foods sales slump amid trade instability

Heightened volatility in hog prices and underlying market conditions contributed to Canadian meat processor Maple Leaf Foods’ net earnings dropping 29.3% in its third quarter (Q3) results, ended 30 September.
Canadian pork processor Maple Leaf Foods has signed a definitive agreement to acquire VIAU Foods, a producer of premium Italian cooked, dry-cured and charcuterie meats for a purchase price of CA$215m, including CA$30m in Maple Leaf stock.
Canadian-based Maple Leaf Foods has pledged to become the “most sustainable protein company on earth” by investing $28 million in a range of animal welfare technology at its poultry processing plant in Edmonton.
