Brazilian meat processor Marfrig Global Foods has gained certification from international consulting firm DNV-GL for its cattle sourcing, which complies with Amazon conservation practices.

The annual audit was conducted in three stages to assess whether the processor’s cattle sourcing followed the regulations of the Public Commitment on Amazon Cattle Ranching document, which is implemented to combat environmental issues.

The first stage of the audit looked at the system responsible for cattle sourcing and the blacklisting of suppliers located in the Amazon that fail to comply with the social and environmental criteria established by Marfrig.

The second stage included verifications of Marfrig’s geomonitoring system, while the final process examined the environmental and property compliance process throughout the supply chain.

This is the sixth successive year that Marfrig Global Foods has complied with the Amazon practices.

Preserving the Amazon is one of our priorities in environmental sustainability,” said Eduardo Miron, CEO of Marfrig Global Foods. “Since 2012, Marfrig is the only company to be certified 100% in compliance by all audits related to the Public Commitment on Amazon Cattle Ranching. The audit’s findings reflect our commitment to best environmental practices.”

Marfrig said it has made considerable efforts to reduce cattle emissions within the Amazon region after forging a partnership with The Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) to reduce methane gas emitted by cows in August.
