Kellogg’s takes 60-year-old snack cake brand into new category

The Little Debbie Crème Pie is rolling out across the US in cereal form, featuring crispy oatmeal cookie flavoured cereal pieces with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and molasses. According to the breakfast cereal giant, each bite delivers the flavour of America’s No. 1 selling snack cake. “With Kellogg's Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies Cereal, families can experience the iconic snack in a whole new form, building new breakfast memories while paying homage to the beloved childhood snack,” said Erin Storm, senior marketing director of Kellogg All Family Cereal. She noted the snack cakes have been enjoyed by “millions of kids and adults” for generations. More than 138 billion Little Debbie snacks have been consumed by Americans since they were launched by McKee Foods in 1960. The family-owned Tennessee company was founded during the Great Depression by Ruth and OD McKee, who started selling the cakes from his 1928 Whippet. The snack cakes were named after their (then) four-year-old granddaughter, Debbie McKee-Fowler, who today serves as EVP of McKee Foods Corporation. The Little Debbie brand has continued to crank out some of the most notable snacks on North American retail shelves for almost a century, including Swiss Cake Rolls, Honey Buns, Star Crunch, Strawberry Shortcake Rolls, Nutty Bars, Cosmic Brownies, Zebra Cakes and Oatmeal Creme Pies. “It’s a joyous moment to see one of our fans' most-loved Little Debbie products be transformed for a new eating experience,” added Jeff Badger, VP of marketing at McKee Foods. “The cereal captures the flavour of Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies in a fun, new way, whether you enjoy it in a bowl with milk or straight out of the box.” Kellogg’s Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies Cereal is available in stores nationwide and online for a RRP of $3.99 for a 9.1oz box and $5.69 for a 14.5oz box.
