Plant-based foods co Nabati Foods – which is based in Edmonton, Canada, with a US HQ in Seattle - has launched a plant-based liquid egg product (Nabati Plant Eggz) at Nabati.ca, that will soon roll out at Sobeys in Quebec, and at Whole Foods across British Columbia and Ontario.

Made from a base of lupin and pea protein and sold in 355ml bottles, Nabati Plant Eggz can be cooked like traditional chicken eggs in dishes such as omelets, quiches, and scrambled eggs, said CEO Ahmad Yehya.

“We created Nabati Plant Eggz because we weren’t satisfied with the options that we could find on the market. We are excited to be the first Canadian company to launch a plant-based liquid egg product that offers the same consistency, taste, and texture as a traditional chicken egg.

Each serving has 100 calories, 6g protein, 2g fiber, and no cholesterol. The eggz are also high in vitamin A and E, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B12, and pantothenic acid.

Founded in 2014 with products now distributed in Canada and the US through grocery, foodservice, and industrial channels, Nabati Foods - a portfolio company of Eat Beyond Holdings - has four product platforms: plant-based eggs, dairy-free cheesecakes, cheese alternatives, and plant-based meats.

Plant-based eggs

According to data from SPINS, US retail sales of plant-based eggs in measured channels were up 167.8% to a modest $27m in 2020, although the overall market for plant-based eggs is likely much bigger as this data does not include c-stores, e-commerce sales, or data from some retailers such as Trader Joe’s, ALDI, and Costco.

It also excludes sales in foodservice (Starbucks, Peet's Coffee, Philz Coffee etc), a growing area of opportunity for plant-based eggs, as brands developing plant-based meat offerings seek vegan accompaniments (egg, cheese, mayo etc).

Key players in the plant-based egg space include Eat Just, Follow Your Heart (Danone), Zero Egg, Spero Foods, neat egg (Atlantic Natural Foods), and Bob's Red Mill, while some retailers such as Kroger have also launched private label egg replacements for baking applications.

Crafty Counter, meanwhile, is developing plant-based boiled eggs for snacking under the Wundereggs brand.
