Flashfood diverted 37 million pounds of food from landfills and saved consumers more than $93 million on food, including $13 million in fresh produces, the technology provider said in its recently published 2023 impact report.

Flashflood works with retailers to provide a marketplace for consumers to shop fresh produce, meat and other products at a discount of up to 50%. Flashfood has deployed its technology in more than 2,000 stores across the US and Canada, with plans to expand into more Meijer stores this year.

Flashfood claimed in the report to have shrunk food waste by 27% on average per store.

This year, Flashfood will invest in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and carbon impact reporting capabilities and plans to measure diversity, equity and inclusion metrics to include in next year's annual impact report.

“The aim of Flashfood’s annual impact report is not just to communicate our progress, but to offer research and insights the industry can benefit from, and to highlight other organizations we support. Through partnership, I genuinely believe that the best days of humanity are ahead of us, not behind us, and I hope the industry can join me in this optimism," said Nicholas Bertram, president and CEO of Flashfood in a press release.

Working with Meijer to reduce food waste, promote access to healthy foods

Last year, Flashfood rolled out its service to consumers on SNAP EBT at all 234 Meijer stores in the Midwest through a partnership with payment processing company Forage.

By the end of 2023, 4% of all sales on Flashfood's platform at Meijer were SNAP EBT users, equating to more than 16,000 Meijer shoppers on the platform. Most of these consumers (69%) spent their SNAP EBT benefits on produce and meat and another 5% on fish and dairy.

Meijer was Flashfood's first US partner to hit 10 million pounds of food saved from landfills, the impact report stated. Flashfood plans to roll out the SNAP EBT program to all US partners by the end of the year.
