Chia demand outstripping supply to lead to big crop increase in crop area next year: BI chief

Huge demand for chia will see chia become a ‘great crop’ for the key growing regions, says George Pontiakos, President of BI Nutraceuticals, as consumers embrace the super seed.

Speaking with Stephen Daniells at the recent IFT trade show in Las Vegas, Pontiakos explained that the crop is being farmed in Central and South America, Mexico, and Australia.

“Next year, depending on weather, we’ll see a lot more hectare allocation to that crop. It will be a great crop for those regions of the world.”

Pontiakos also spoke about baobab, an ingredient BI is very proud to have in its portfolio.

“North American traction is very, very strong. Again, I wouldn’t be surprised to see demand outstrip demand for baobab,”​ he said
