MyPlate (minus the meat)
The 2010 dietary guidelines (DG) for Americans talk about shifting food patterns to include more plant-based foods, but they fall short of acknowledging the viability of vegetarian diets for promoting optimal health, said Dr Amy Lanou, Assistant Professor in the Dept of Health and Wellness at the University of North Carolina Asheville.
However, by getting the DG Committee to consider questions such as, 'How do the health outcomes of a vegetarian diet compare to those of a non-vegetarian diet?', this could change, she said, given the growing body of evidence suggesting that vegetarians and vegans are at lower risk of developing chronic disease.
