Stonyfield Frozen Yogurt Pearls use edible packaging
In the first product launch to use edible casing technology from Cambridge, MA edible packaging startup WikiFoods Inc., Stonyfield launched Frozen Yogurt Pearls. The "waste free" product is formulated with scoops of Stonyfield organic yogurt enveloped in portion-controlled edible “skins” made from organic fruit, using patent-pending technology by Harvard professor and WikiFoods founder David Edwards. They will initially be sold in small, biodegradable cellulose bags in the freezer section at certain Massachusetts Whole Foods Markets stores.
Eventually, shoppers will be able to purchase the pearls over the counter at so called Wikibars, where they can be placed directly in shoppers’ bags, egg cartons, or any container they bring, though most retailers aren’t yet equipped to sell them package-free, according to a press release. Available varieties include peach-vanilla, banana-chocolate, strawberry-vanilla and coconut-chocolate.
