Americans need to shift the way they think about protein and consume it in small amounts throughout the day rather than in one large meal, says marketing coordinator for Fonterra USA Teresa Polli.

Speaking to FoodNavigator-USA at Supply Expo in Anaheim, California, Polli said that people should eat smaller quantities more often in order to consistently build and sustain muscle, but most consume a lot of protein in one meal instead.

According to the findings of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, most Americans already consume enough protein, but Polli said that specific age groups have particular protein needs, presenting opportunities for food manufacturers to incorporate protein into meals and convenience foods.

In particular, she said that added protein can make foods more satiating, and can help the elderly deal with muscle loss.
