Kellogg cereal launches tout whole grains, protein
Kellogg Co. hopes to capitalize on the appeal of whole grains and protein with two new Kellogg’s brand cereal launches.
Kellogg's Jif Peanut Butter cereal, made with Jif peanut butter, has 100 calories and 8 grams of whole grains, along with 11 vitamins and minerals. Rice Krispies Multi-Grain Shapes cereal features graham-flavored shapes ideal for snacking or in a bowl with milk. This multi-grain cereal contains rice and whole grain and is a good source of fiber, along with 12 vitamins and minerals and 6 grams of sugar per serving.
Seizing on cereal’s portability, the manufacturer also unveiled a line of On the Go Fun cereal pouches to appeal to the growing number of consumers who are replacing meals with snacks. (Half of eating occasions in the US are now mini-meals or snacks, trendwatcher Hartman Group says.) Flavors includeFroot Loops, Krave Chocolate, Apple Jacks and Corn Pops in single-serving portable snack packages.
And although Kellogg claims that its new and existing cereals offer healthy breakfast and snack options, the Environmental Working Group recently slammed the added sugar content in many major cereal brands—including several Kellogg’s brands—in a recent report. Kellogg countered that it has reduced the sugar in its top-selling kids’ cereals by 20 to 30%. (Read more here.)
