Four startups pitching next month at Future Food Tech Alternative Proteins Summit in Chicago, along with entrepreneurs from many more emerging businesses showcasing in the event’s Startup Pavilion, are tackling some of the biggest challenges facing plant-based, cultivated and fermented meat and dairy alternatives.

Presenting on the event’s main stage on June 18 are:

  • Caladan Bio – On a mission to “revolutionize the way synthetic biology companies design, prototype and scale their fermentation experiments,” Caladan Bio creates “lower-cost, cutting-edge bioreactors and advanced software.”
  • Livestock LABS – Using advanced genetic engineering, data analytics and machine learning, Livestock LABS develops cell lines for the cultivated meat sector with an eye toward reducing cost, time and uncertainty for industry stakeholders.
  • Uncracked – A food-tech company developing functional solutions for food and beverage with its proprietary SeaStack technology that creates clean label products with seaweed.
  • Hatchless – By using proprietary meat farming technology, Hatchless produces animal-based meat from eggs without killing animals and without the application of chemicals, growth factors, hormones, enzymes, antibiotics or genetically modified cells.

After each pitch, judges Nate Crosser, principal at Blue Horizon, and Nathan Cooper, managing partner at Barrel Ventures, will offer feedback.

Also showcasing new ideas at the Startup Pavilion will be:

  • Bioeutectics – An innovator of next generation green solvents to replace petrochemical solvents in industrial processes. Within food, it improves the functionality of bio extracts and makes ingredients with natural preservers.
  • Hydrosome LABS – A Chicago-based business-to-business biotechnology company that aims to improve fermentation speed and yields with help from “ultrafine bubbles” that reduce the lag phase and optimize nutrient and gas delivery to microorganisms.
  • PF Biotech – A biology-based platform that produces “highly bioactive” alternative human milk proteins through a scalable precision fermentation process. It also focuses on alternative proteins or sports, medical, elderly and early-life nutrition.
  • Proxy Foods – An AI recipe formulation platform that combines advanced data analytics and food science insights with an ingredient database to make data-driven decisions for food and beverage manufacturers.

Caladan will also have a booth in the pavilion where the team can share additional information beyond its pitch on the mainstage.

It is not too late for startups to apply for a spot in the pavilion, which includes two delegate passes to the Alternative Proteins Summit and support from the show’s host ReThink. Learn more about how to apply in the Startup Pavilion and check out the Summit’s full agenda.
