Pioneering Belgian ingredients supplier Orafti Active Food Ingredients is the first, and only, producer of inulin and oligofructose to get the GMP stamp of approval from the American Institute of Baking.

The company, a subsidiary of Belgian agro-food group Raffinerie Tirlemontoise/Tiense Suikerraffinaderij - in turn part of sugar group Sudzucker - manufactures functional food ingredients derived from chicory.

For several years the Belgian firm has been working on prebiotics - ingredients that have been demonstrated to stimulate the growth of beneficial gut micro-flora with proven health effects.

This is the case for Orafti's oligofructose and inulin, sold under the trade names Raftilose and Raftiline. Raftilose contains oligofructose, which consists of a mixture of oligosaccharides prepared by partial hydrolysis of inulin molecules and Raftiline is inulin powder.

The AIB, independent auditors to the food industry, gave Orafti an 'excellent' score in a recent food safety audit, stating that the company is 'committed to providing safe, high quality food products to consumers'.

The audit was undertaken at Orafti's production facility in Oreye, Belgium.
