Added sugar: Friend or foe? And are sweetened dried cranberries really no better for you than gummy bears?
In a panel debate on added sugar, nutrition and culinary consultant Monica Reinagel (right); Dr Jim Painter, professor at the school of family and consumer sciences at Eastern Illinois University (left); and sports scientist Marie Spano (center) explored how to reduce added sugar in everything from Asian cooking sauces to muffins and cereal bars by using raisin juice concentrate and raisin pastes.
They also examined the nutritional profile of some juice-based beverages, dried fruits (notably dried sweetened cranberries), and other products (banana chips) that are marketed as ‘healthy snacks’, but can be loaded with added sugars.
