Nestlé Health Science (NHS) is investing $70m in a product technology center in Bridgewater, New Jersey, that will become its new US HQ and research hub.

The center, which will open in 2016, will focus on applied research and product development, sensory perception, engineering and packaging.

NHS staff from the company’s R&D center in Minneapolis will relocate to the new facility, as will the US HQ functions of Nestlé Health Science, which is currently based in Florham Park, NJ.

Acquisitions, partnerships, investments

Formed in 2011 and based near Lausanne in Switzerland, Nestlé Health Science is dedicated to advancing the role of nutritional therapy in healthcare, and has made several acquisitions, investments and partnerships over the past four years.

Its acquisitions include UK-based Vitaflo, which is developing products for people with congenital metabolic disorders; San Diego-based Prometheus Laboratories, which is focused on the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disorders within the fields of gastroenterology and oncology; and Louisiana-based Pamlab, which develops medical foods for patients with mild cognitive impairment, depression and diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Botanicals

It has also taken a minority stake in Colorado-based Accera, which specializes in the research, development and commercialization of medical foods for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s; and has set up a joint venture with pharmaceutical and healthcare group Chi-Med to develop nutritional and medicinal products from botanical plants.

The JV- Nutrition Science Partners - will focus on gastrointestinal health and may in the future expand into the metabolic disease and brain health areas.
