Back in May 2009, staff at the McIntosh plant were given some pretty grim news. The site was being mothballed with production switching to Tate & Lyle's more modern plant in Singapore - and most of them were to be laid off.
Almost exactly two years later, Tate & Lyle changed gears again, and announced plans to bring the plant out of retirement and back into business. And last month, they did - three months ahead of schedule...
The first batch was produced on February 16, and the first product shipped to customers on March 9. Efficiency levels are already "pretty close" to where they were when the plant was shut down, says Huber. "There are still a few areas we are optimizing."
