Proposal to update use of parasiticides put forward
The NOP should ease the use of parasiticides on organic livestock in several instances, the board voted to recommend at the meeting. Specifically, they said the withholding period after treatment with Fenbendazole or Moxidectin should be reduced to two days from 90 days for dairy cows and 36 days for goats and sheep. In addition, Moxidectin should be allowed for both internal and external use and Fenbendzaole should be allowed without a vet’s written order. Unchanged are 90-day withdrawal period for lvermectin, the prohibition on use in slaughter stock and the allowed use only in emergency situations.
Perhaps the most notable element of this change is support to allow for sale as organic wool from sheep who were once treated with paraciticides.
