Next we caught up with Anthony Pavel, a partner in the food practice at law firm Morgan Lewis & Bockius, to ask him what he thinks will happen with the high-profile class action lawsuit Cox vs Gruma Corp over ‘all-natural’ claims on Mission tortilla chips (which contain ingredients from GM corn). Click here for details.
The case hit the headlines earlier this month after a federal judge stayed the action for six months to let the FDA determine "the question of whether and under what circumstances food products containing ingredients produced using bio-engineered seed may or may not be labeled ‘Natural’ or ‘All Natural’ or ‘100% Natural’".
So will the FDA come up trumps in the next six months?
In a word, predicted Pavel: 'NO'. However, asked whether there will be some kind of GMO labeling legislation in the US in the next few years, the answer is almost certainly 'YES', he predicted.
