Columbus taps into antibiotic free trend
Upmarket deli meat brand Columbus - which has also tapped into the trend towards high-protein snacking with the recent launch of Paninos (bite-sized rolls of salumi and cheese); and Salame & Cheese Crisps (shelf-stable salami with sourdough cheese crisps) is also meeting demand for antibiotic free meats with the launch of a new line of pre-sliced uncured antibiotic free salami.
There are three varieties: Italian dry salami (made with California red wine and crushed peppercorns); Genoa salami (with hints of garlic); and Pepperoni (with paprika).
According to Nielsen data (52 weeks to July 1, 2017), antibiotic-free prepackaged deli meat is growing at a rate four times faster than conventional prepackaged deli meat, said the company, which notched up sales growth of 22% in the 26 weeks to July 1, 2017 vs the same period last year, making it the fastest-growing top 10 deli meat brand in the country.
