22 August 2012 – Indiana-based Chamberlain Farms initiated a voluntary recall of all of its cantaloupes from the 2012 growing season after the firm was pinpointed as a likely source of a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak in the US.
To date, 178 people have become infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium across 21 states. Of these, 62 have been hospitalised and two have died.
A joint investigation involving the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local public health authorities identified Chamberlain Farms as a likely source of the outbreak.
“The FDA investigation is on-going and incomplete at this time. After discussion with the FDA, Chamberlain Farm Produce Inc. decided to conduct the recall as a precautionary measure,” said a notice posted on the FDA website.
