HARRY BALZER, NPD Group: We'll still be eating burgers, fries & soda, but from different sources
Next up is HARRY BALZER, chief industry analyst and vice president at NPD Group:
If we went back 35 years ago, the top items bought at a restaurant were carbonated soft drinks, fries and burgers. Know what it was yesterday? It was carbonated soft drinks, fries and burgers.
The future of the food and beverage market, however, will not be so much about the foods and beverages we will consume, but who will prepare them.
But if you must have some predictions, how about these:
On Jan. 23, 2026, fewer than 50% of all main dishes served at dinner in our homes will be “homemade.”
On Aug. 15, 2030, for the first time, more Americans will be eating salads as a main dish than as a side dish.
On June 3, 2043, chicken sandwiches will replace hamburgers as the top sandwich ordered at restaurants.
