neat debuts chia and garbanzo egg replacer
Responding to growing demand for an all-natural, vegan egg replacer, Pennsylvania-based neat Foods launched neat egg, a combination of ground chia seeds and chickpeas that can take the place of an egg in everything from pancakes to cookies. The gluten-free, non-GMO, shelf-stable ingredient, which will be introduced at Expo East in Baltimore, will be sold online and at select retailers nationwide.
Each 4.5-ounce pouch will retail at $5.99 to $6.99 and makes the equivalent of 18 eggs (consumers blend 2 tablespoons of water with 1 tablespoon of neat egg to yield the equivalent of one egg). Neat egg is intended for use in recipes where eggs serve as binders and leavening agents, according to the company.
